Sustainable Dartmoor Camping

We offer sustainable camping on 6 large flat tent pitches in our sloping hay meadow and separately in our woods to campers who are members of the Nearly Wild Camping Club. We are also happy to take bookings from groups who have their own camping licence, e.g. Duke of Edinburgh Award, Scouts, Guides etc.

BBQs and campfires are permitted and there is a shared campfire where you can meet and share stories other campers or you can borrow one of our fire pits. Dry logs for your campfire sourced from our woodland are available to buy.

Dog Friendly

Dogs are welcome to stay for free but must be kept under your control at all times so as not to disturb the free-range chickens, wildlife and other campers. For most dogs this will mean that they will need to be on a lead.

Please pick up their poop from the camping field and gardens. Remember if you use biodegradable poop bags these can be disposed of in the compost loo.

Toilets and Showers

Tree bog, accessible, ramp, rainwater, sustainable

The hot water in the shower block is primarily heated by solar thermal and photovoltaics, backed up by the boiler.  In peak times there can be a lag while the water in the tank reheats so the best time to have a shower on a sunny day is late afternoon when we have a full tank of hot water!  The grey water and sewage flows straight to our septic tank.  We’d be grateful if you could use these responsibly to minimise the impact on the environment.

We still have our “awesome” tree bog compost toilet and adjacent “tree pee”, with handwashing facilities fed from a rainwater butt.

In the Hay Meadow field there is a drinking water tap supplying our own Dartmoor spring water which is filtered and UV treated on site and a washing up area.

Plus, you can go for a quick dip, paddle or swim in the river and in the Summer, Moretonhampstead’s heated outdoor swimming pool is not far away or you can go further afield to try the pools at Bovey Tracey and Chagford.

Campers' Kitchen

We know it can be a pain to have to light the stove to get your morning cup of coffee or hot chocolate in the evening.  So there is a small camper’s kitchen with a kettle, microwave and washing up area just outside the showers.  Another washing up area with hot water is provided in the Hay Meadow.

And for the ultimate luxury treat yourself to a breakfast bap or even book a continental breakfast in the B&B.

Car Parking

Due to the sloping nature of the site it is not possible to have your car by your tent, you will be asked to leave it in the car park at the top of the hill.  For the same reason we are unable to accommodate camping in camper vans or caravans – there’s no level area to park on.  Sorry!  If you require a pitch at the top of the hill next to the parking area please let us know.

We have a selection of barrows. trolleys and sack trucks to help you carry your gear.  If you are on one of the smaller nearly wild pitches you will still have to carry your gear some of the way.

When you arrive please park facing the hedge.  Trust us – its much easier than trying to reverse up the hill, especially if the grass is wet.
