Hay Meadow Camping on Dartmoor

Hay Meadow Camping on Dartmoor

Our Hay Meadow camping field is only open for camping in the summer.  It slopes downhill from the car park to the river.  Remember cars must be left in the car park but we provide barrows and trolleys to help you move your equipment.  Each pitch has its own level area separated from its neighbour by the grass of the hay meadow which we keep unmown as biodiversity corridors.  In the height of summer the field is rich with wild flowers, butterflies and bees.

You can have campfires in the Hay Meadow and there are fire pits and fire baskets for you to use.  Please keep BBQs off the ground to protect the ground.

These pitches are priced per pitch based on 4 people and include the hot showers and toilets, extra people are charged per person.  You can have as many tents, shelters etc as you like on the pitch but these should be at least 3 metres apart for safety reasons.  If they are too close together we will ask you to pay for another pitch.  The dimensions given are for the largest rectangle that can be fitted on the pitch, but as the pitches are not rectangular they are typically quite a bit bigger than this.

Every pitch has its own unique character, so click on the pitch names below to see the descriptions.  Then when you book if you want a particular one, do please let us know and we’ll do our best to accomodate your request.

If this sounds too busy and noisy for you then our Nearly Wild Pitches might be your taste.

Bell tent on Hay Meadow Orange PitchApprox size: 10 x 6 m

Situated at the top of the Hay Meadow, the orange pitch is conveniently located close to the car park, the washing up sink, drinking water tap and recycling area.  The downside is that it is also closer to the road.  The pitch is L-shaped so there is an additional area not included in the measurements.

The pitch is sheltered by the trees and hedgeline as shown in the picture.  Being higher up the hillside  it has a good view and keeps the sun longer in the evening

Approx size: 14 x 8 m

red pitch from car park looking across the valley Located in the middle at the top of the Hay Meadow, the red pitch is conveniently located close to the car park and is close to the washing up sink, drinking water tap and recycling area.  The downside is that it is also close to the road.

Being higher up the hillside it has a good view and keeps the sun longer in the evening than the pitches lower down the slope.

Approx size: 12 x 4.5 m

Hay Meadow Yellow Pitch from below with two lightweight tents

Located half-way up the field in the middle of the camping area.  This pitch is currently a bit narrower than the others, although we are working on levelling it out at the back.  Would suit long narrow tents or two or three smaller tents.

It is a good compromise between the convenience of Orange and Red close to the car park and Blue and Green which are closer to the river and shaded in the evening.

Blue pitch with small hike tentApprox size: 11 x 6 m

Located near the bottom of the field, blue pitch is closest to the compost toilet and close to the river.  It snuggles in beside the hedge giving protection on a windy day and shade on a sunny afternoon.  However, the pitches at the bottom of the hill do tend to lose the sun earlier than those higher up.

There is a slightly raised campfire between Blue and Green Pitch which make these ideal to be booked together for larger groups.

Hay Meadow Green Pitch in WinterApprox Size: 13 x 8m

Located at the bottom of the field, and next to the campfire, green pitch is closer to the river than the other Hay Meadow pitches.  However, the pitches at the bottom of the hill do tend to lose the sun earlier than those higher up.

There is a slightly raised campfire between Blue and Green Pitch which make these ideal to be booked together for larger groups.

Please note that the pitch does slope very slightly as it has not been terraced.
